AUSTINSDREAM BORDER COLLIES

BREED INFORMATION

BREED INFORMATION

For people looking to add a Border Collie to the family, you will need to do some research of heredity diseases to look out for including Ceroid Lipfuscinosis (CL) Trapped Neutrophil Sydrome (TNS), Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), Hip Dysplacia (HD).

The diseases or conditions listed above are being control by good breeding practices by registered Border Collie Breeders; however it is important that you ask questions regarding these conditions.

A breeder should be happy to discuss these issues

CEROID LIPOFUSCINOSIS (CL)

CL is a particularly nasty disease that effects the brain of the Border Collie. A puppy appears normal at first but around the age of 18 months they will start to show symptoms of brain mainfunction.

An effect dog will die by the age of 2 years, luckily it is very rare in the breed as DNA tests are available to indentify carriers of the disease.

A carrier is not affected and should live a normal life but if bred to another carrier then most likely produce affected puppies.

COLLIE EYE ANOMALY (CEA)

CEA is a disease that effects the dogs eyes. It has not been known to be severe enough in Border collies to make a dog blind.

Again DNA test has been developed to identify dogs that are clear, carriers or affected. Dogs that are carriers will not develop any symptoms of the disease and will lead a normal life.  If bred to another carrier will most certanily produce affected puppies.

DNA tests are expensive but in order to ensure the disease is eliminated from our breed over the coming years it is important to continue testing and never to bred carriers together.

TRAPPED NEUTROPHIL SYNDROME (TNS)

TNS is a rare in Border collies and little is known about the condition relative to other breed issues.

It is a serious neurological problem that effects the growth of puppies.

Again DNA test has been developed to identify dogs that are clear, carriers or affected. Dogs that are carriers will not develop any symptoms of the disease and will lead a normal life.  If bred to another carrier will most certanily produce affected puppies
Early test results indicate that this condition is much more widespread in the breed then first thought.

Again we encourage for you all to ask questions about these conditions. There is plenty of information on breed club websites are a very good resource.
